The refurbishment of the underground passage from Ginza Station to Higashi Ginza Station was conducted. The architecture concept was “under passage which connects people, towns, and memories" and lighting design was focused to create a brighter atmosphere in this dim space. Indirect lighting fixtures were installed on the walls vertically and they were connected with another horizontal indirect fixture installed into the surface of the ceilings. The passage is long, but the lighting design creates a futuristic and rhythmical vibe. The existing old brick pillars in the center of the passage are kept as they were, but the lighting fixtures were placed along both sides to light up the beams and the pillars so that it removes the blocked impression of the basement. To bring to mind the stream which existed in the Ginza area in the Edo period, light blue panels were placed in some parts of the passage. Because of the panels’ pattern, when passengers move, the panels look like fluid waves.
